The Thai people are a very tolerant society. They will put up
with al lot of nonsense from tourists, however there are some things you should never do.
For instance it is very rude to insult or mock the monachy or Buddhism.
Temple Etiquette
When visiting a temple please keep in mind that this is a religious centre for the Thai people. Acting inappropriately will certainly offend them, even if they are to polite to say anything. There are three important things to remember. Dress appropriately: Shorts and sleeveless shirts are inappropriate when visiting a temple.
|
| Often there will be an area of the temple where you can rent some long pants or a long sarong. Please inquire if you cannot find this place as often Thai people are too polite to refuse you entry if you are inappropriately dressed. Respect statues of Buddha: Do not pose in front of Buddha statues for photos. Don't climb or touch the statues. When seated next to these statues make sure your feet are pointed away from the statue (explained later). Respect the monks: Monks aren't meant to be in contact with women in any way. If you are going to give something to a monk please make sure you place it on the ground near them or place it on their 'receiving cloth'. Never sit with your feet pointing towards a monk. |

Monachy
Never insult the Thai monarchy. The Thai people hold their monarchy in great
esteem and will take much offense if you insult or mock them. The penalty for lese-majesty
is seven years in imprisonment. The national anthem is played daily at 8am and 6pm. It is also played at cinemas,
just before the start of a movie. You must stand when the anthem is played or the Thai people will be
very offended, as this is a time to show respect to their nation and the monarchy.
Your Body
Different parts of your body mean different thing in Thailand. The head
is the highest part of your body, but it is also considered the highest part of your spirit.
So to point or touch a Thai's head is considered very rude.
On the other hand the feet and toes are the lowest part of your body. They
are considered to be the same spiritually as well. Make sure you do not point at anything
with your feet or touch anyone with your feet.

| Footwear and Greetings When entering the home of a Thai person make sure that you remove your shoes. When greeting a Thai person you can shake their hand or use the more traditional thai greeting. The Thai greeting is to place your hands infront of you like a prayer. Then say the greeting 'Sawat-dee-krap'. If in doubt use the traditional method. |
